The Meaning of Natural

According to Merriam-Webster's Online Dictionary (http://www.merriam-webster.com/, 2012) the word natural has several definitions. However, we will focus on the following: "existing in or produced by nature : not artificial". This means, there are no alterations or modifications of any kind. Simply put, just as it was intended to be; natural. Hair means everything to a woman, especially in the African American community.  


Black women pride themselves on looks and haircare is no exception. Hair care companies have made millions in sales based on products used to "straighten out" that kinky, curly hair or as our grandmothers use to say, "straighten out that nappy kitchen in the back of your neck". We wanted to swing it like our Causasian counterparts. Whether we relaxed our hair, added extensions or weave, it was going to be done. And for those who didn't have time for all of that, wigs were the way to go.

Embracing the Natural Self

Women of all ethnicities have had a problem with embracing their natural beauty. Why? There is an unreachable standard of beauty that brainwashes women into thinking they are not beautiful, sexy or fierce if they don't have long, straight blond hair, blue eyes, and wear a size 0 in clothes. However, there is a lifestyle of natural and organic that is making its way back into the mainstream market.

Natural hair is back in full effect baby! Women everywhere are embracing their naps, kinks, waves, curls or naturally straight hair. This is a beautiful thing! Women are learning and gaining the power of self-love. Natural hair is virgin hair that has not had any chemicals such as relaxers, perms, color, and no heat products. However, just as you can proclaim to take back your virginity and abstain from sex, you can do the same with your hair.
